The Natural Treatment of Skin Inflammation

Let's discuss an insidious health issue … inflammation.

First of all, exactly what is inflammation? All of us are aware of its results: soreness, swelling, pain, warmth, and occasionally loss of movement. But why does it occur?

The word "inflammation" originates from the Latin "inflammo," which means "I set alight, I light on fire." Inflammation is a natural immune system response to anything that irritates or harms (or threatens to damage) body tissues. The offense detected by the immune system may be caused by foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses, parasites, toxins, or even foreign objects. Or, the target might not actually be a genuine offense, but a mistaken labeling by the immune system of our own healthy tissues or organ systems — known as an autoimmune reaction.

While inflammation is an important part of the recovery process, the process can easily go awry or become extreme. When inflammation either continues too long, becomes extreme, or becomes chronic, then the inflammation itself can trigger damage. Besides that, extreme inflammation causes pain and discomfort.

Numerous pathological or undesirable skin conditions either have an inflammatory component, or are caused entirely by inflammation. The swelling and soreness that accompany bruises, bumps, cuts, burns and various other skin injuries, in addition to much of the discomfort related to them, are inflammatory reactions.

Similarly, numerous pathological conditions are associated with inflammation. Chronic eczema, for example, is essentially inflammation of the skin. Psoriasis is likewise an inflammatory condition. And ordinary rashes are, to a large extent, indicators of inflammation.

Inflammatory conditions of the skin are usually treated with topical steroids. Steroid treatment can often be extremely effective, though sometimes the healing effect is temporary. Even when topical steroids work well to curtail inflammation, steroid therapy has fundamental limitations and risks. The most typical issue related to topical steroids, and the reason why they should be avoided, is that indefinate use of topical steroids can thin the skin. And, as we know, healthy, good looking skin is thick, not thin.
